Douglas Darnell founder of ‘Darnell of London’ was a successful couturier and dressed show business stars like Joan Collins, Diana Dors and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
By 1960 Darnell opened his salon in Hinde Street in Mayfair, where he employed a small team of assistants to cope with the growing workload. Diana Dors would drop in for a coffee, while a young Roger Moore might be observed waiting while his wife, the singer Dorothy Squires, was in the back room for a fitting.
Darnell also created elegant designs for leading female impersonators such as the drag queen Ricky Renee and a young Danny La Rue.
In the late 1960s Darnell dissolved his business partnership to work from home, where he produced some of his most extravagant and glamorous creations.
This incredible gown was purchased originally from Harrods in the 1960’s, it must have been for someone very special as in the 1960’s dresses were still fairly simple from the post war fall out.
We have lovingly restored this bridal gown into a strapless dress with a smaller more manageable train. It also comes with the original high neck, long sleeve lace jacket that can be kept as a separate or re-attached to the gown! This dress is £1195 and would fit a size 10.
